Final post . . .

My coursework is now complete and ready for examination.

Evaluation Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction

and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Here is a short stop motion video explaining what technology was used for the different stages of my media coursework.

Being able to use our own camera for the music video was very useful as we were then able to use the camera in our own time and get certain scenes done outside of the class time. Also, we first used a college camera and it was very old and damaged and so the video captured was not to as good a quality as the owned camera. The owned camera offered better technical facilities such as the ability to turn off sound while recording and changing the colour scheme.

The theory of technical determinism  presumes that a society's technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values. Therefore within the production process i believe that technology was pivotal in helping to create the music video. however, as a group we needed to control the amount of technology used and therefore we decided how much technology was used and what types were used.

We used media 2.0 with the coursework to gain feedback from our audience. using social networking sites such as Facebook and Tumblr to gain information about what our target audience like and dislike. also using these websites we were able to gain information globally by getting in contact with people from all over the world.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

To gain the audience feedback I created a group on the social networking site to show people my magazine advert, digipack and music video. In doing so, people were then able to give me feedback on what they like and what can be done to make it better.
Here is a print screen of the group created on Facebook

Here is the feedback from the digipack:

One person told me in the feedback that the original digipack needed more colour and so I added in specks of red for the inside of the digipack. Also, I was told that the black and white contrasts each other and the red on the inside is a good addition. Overall I had all positive feedback on the digipack. I was also told that the images and text suit the genre of music and the overall feel of the audience feedback was positive.

Here is the feedback from the magazine advert:

Once again, I was only given positive feedback with the magazine advert. People liked the black and white effect and they believed it was easy from the colours to know that both the magazine advert and the digipack  were for the same album. Also, I was told that the advert is a good size for the artist Sally J Johnson as she is not a well known artist the half page size suited.

To gain feedback on my media coursework I used qualitative research to go about gaining my feedback. This means that the feedback gained is not in numbers and therefore no percentage can be calculated. Also, it means I was able to gain in depth information as to what people thought about the music video.

Final Magazine Advert

Here is the final magazine advert I have chosen to use. I have taken pieces from each draft and then made this final advert. With this advert I have chosen to make it a half page as the artist Sally J Johnson is not well known and is therefore a niche artist and it seemed realistic for the advert to therefore be a half page. Also the black and white theme runs throughout which I also plan to use for the rest of the Digi pack.

Digipack

Here is my Digipack. As I said in my magazine advert post, I have kept with the black and white theme. Also I decided to use the photographs of the ballerina because I believe her part in the video is what makes the story and that makes her the main character.

Rough cut of music video

Here is the feedback gained from the rough cut music video:

Filming 19/03/12

Today we filmed the parts where the woodland animals are needed. We are edging closer towards the end of filming and editing is coming along nicely! I think we are all looking forward to the end of the filming as it has been a long process.

Time Management

We have now started editing! There is still a bit more filming to do but we shall try and get that sorted outside of lesson time and now start using that time to get the editing done. Hopefully by the end of the week we will have a rough cut of the music video.

Filming! 27/02/12

Today we did a lot of filming! we were able to shoot the beginning of the video and get a large percentage of the middle. Emily did a really good job today! she was amazing in front of the camera! Jade was so elegant and just plan amazing.

We are hopefully going to be filming the very end shot on wednesday and also the shots with the woodland animals, fingers crossed the weather stays good for us!

Time Management

We should be editing the filming today. However, we have not done all the filming yet and also we need to film a lot more. We are able to edit the filming we put together on monday but there is still a lot more that needs to be done. Plus, the dancer is absent today which also means we cannot do any filming today so once again we will be sorting out our blogs and also sorting out what actor is going to wear what mask.

Masks!

The masks have finally arrived and so we can now shoot the scenes where the woodland creatures are needed.

We are unable to film today as the weather is cloudy and very windy, also as Emily and Jade are part of the school drama production they are worn out from all the late night practices and so they are unable to act for us today. But, we will be able to get lots of filming done next monday (hopefully)

Filming! 20/02/12

Today we have decided to film during our double lesson of media. Although, Sarah is away so we are one man down. We are going to do the scene of the ballerina dancing away from the main actress and also the scene when the ballerina is walking down the path just after the animals have ran down, looking afraid.

The weather is a bit chilly today, but hopefully it doesn't rain and we can get as much done as possible.

...

We have been able to video the ballerina dancing away and are unable to edit as the camera has made the filming dodgy by pixilating the film. However, we took the shots with another camera so hopefully we can move on and film some more on Wednesday!!

Choreography / Movement

For our music video we have planned to have a lot of movement, which varies from dancing, walking to slow motion running (we hope). We don't have any real dancing moments but if we find ourselves with a few extra seconds to fill we can easily use some dancing shots. Our music video doesn't really call for much movement and so planning it would be hard, if not impossible.

Creativity - Inspirations

Here are some of my inspirations for the music video:

The film inception inspired me to make the music video look more like a dream and have the camera at different angles to make the video more abstract.

The music artist Florence and the Machine is also an inspiration to me for the music video as her genre of music is the same as Sally J Johnson and the idea of Florence and the Machines music videos being similar is because of the animal masks being used and also her videos have a link to alice and wonderland which is what i want to link with my music video.

Another influence is the location of a woods and the area to be tight and full of trees, fallen logs and so on. The idea of the nightmare part of the video being in a location near a castle such as the image above.

As i said above, Alice in Wonderland is also another inspiration for the music video as the idea of the rabbit to be featured and for the main actor to be in a dream world such as Alice.

Target Audience Profile

Here I have written a profile for who the target audience for the music video is going to be and what their interests are and so on.

Our audience would, as we think, be arty and into being creative and different. They might be in a profession, which allows this, or they could be student’s studying a future career possibility.

Age; 16-25

Gender; mostly female as this type of music (mostly instrumental)

Genre of other music they might like; alternative/abstract/niche

Education; students, so mainly people who are already in education or some who might be going back into education to teach.

Demographics; band E-Students and band B-middle management, teachers, creative and media people
Culture; British

Psychographics; Hedonists-people who just want to have a god time, Individualists-people who want to stand out from he crowd and like to think for themselves and Explorers-seeks discovery, energy, individualism and experience, values difference and adventure.

Media interests; they might like media such as indie films, arty films. Types of music such as Florence and The Machine, and Mumford & Sons and other niche bands or artists. They would like magazines such as NME.

Shopping; Soho, Charity shops, antique shops, vintage shops.

Loyalty to Brands; Our audience in particular might not be loyal to any one particular brand seeing as we have profiled them as buying at many different shops, like charity shops in the bid to be unique.

  • This video shows in a comical way what the target audience for our music video is and what they believe in and how they think.

  • Mumford and Sons are what our target audience will be interested in music wise.

Analysis of Digipack

Here I am going to analyse the digipack of the artist Bruno Mars and his album doo-wops & hooligans.

  • There is no image of the artist himself on the cover of this album. However, there is a cartoon figure that connotes a cartoon image of Bruno Mars as the cartoon has his signature hat. The colour orange is the main colour which connotes sun, warmth and friendship. This then lets the audience know that the songs are summery and up beat.
  • The font type is serif, so it is a modern take and the name "Bruno Mars" is in a style that is similar with comic books and this may link with the cartoon image of the artists and a grenade flying through the air (which is the name of one of the songs.)
  • There is a lack in detail on the front cover, there are no copyright symbols. there is only the main image, the title of the album and a sticker indicating what songs are included.
  • The image takes up the whole size of the front cover and this indicates that it is the main theme of the whole album. Also, the colour runs through the whole digipack.

  • At the back of the digipack there is a bar code and also there are symbols and small writing at the bottom which indicates who produced the album and copyright legislation's.
  • In the middle of the back there is a list of what tracks feature what songs.
  • the rest of the back of the digipack is very bland and there is no detail, images or patterns.

  • There is a difference in colour inside the digipack as the CD is black, the cartoon figure of Bruno Mars is however the colour of the overall digipack.
  • With the booklet, there is more writing and information about the way the songs were written, recorded and produced and the record company that Bruno Mars is with.

  • This is the inside of the booklet and it is a cartoon image of the artist Bruno Mars and unlike the image on the CD and the cover of the album there is more detail and you are able to recognise the artist facial features. The background however is not as detailed as it is just the same as the front cover with the same dominant colour.
